A society that’s hypersensitive about privacy and portrait rights feels oddly uncomfortable. Lots of people eagerly upload their personal data online, yet loudly assert those very rights. At the same time, surveillance is unquestionably advancing, and we enjoy a kind of “security” at the cost of those rights. There’s the contradiction.

The truth is, people aren’t that interested in others. There isn’t someone staring at you behind every camera. To those around you, you’re more like the “henohenomoheji” figure in Utagawa Hiroshige’s caricature print—an anonymous mark. Ironically, your rights end up being protected only insofar as you exist as that anonymous symbol.
